Catedral de Santa María- Burgos
Catedral de Santa María- Burgos

At just two hours drive from Madrid (Spain) you will find Burgos. This historic city was founded in 884, during the reign of Alfonso III. Despite its age, this is a city where tradition and modernity overlap.

Burgos is surrounded by the Vena and Arlanzón rivers whose green banks in addition to the natural environment, shape a so-called ‘green ring’ which embraces the city.

The large monumental highlights are headed by St. Mary’s Cathedral, exponent of Gothic architecture declared Wold Heritage by UNESCO. The ‘Santa María la Real de las Huelgas’ Monastery and Miraflores Charterhouse are great references too. The city is crossed by the Camino de Santiago’ which is also World Heritage.

Its promenades and tidy gardens invite you to lose yourself and enjoy the charming streets and cozy corners. Not surprisingly, it was recognized by The NY Times as one of the places to go in 2013. Last 2013 Burgos was also recognized as Gastronomic Capital of Spain due to the development of the cooking techniques and innovations beyond the typical products. Some of the typical dishes are roast lamb (called ‘lechazo’), ‘morcilla de Burgos’, fresh cheese and some other deli you can taste in ‘tapas’ while drinking a glass of the extraordinary wines with denomination of origin ‘Ribera del Duero’, Rioja or Arlanza.

Less than 15 km from the city is placed the Archaeological Site of Atapuerca, also under protection of UNESCO since 2000. The Human Evolution Museum, nestled in the city center, shows the most important fossil found there. The architecture of this prehistory Museum is paradoxically a modernity symbol of the city.

For the last years the city has experienced a significant boom in the research sector, by having centers like the CENIEH, the ‘Área Burgalesa de Investigación’, the CREER and the ITCL, among others.
