  • Hiperbaric becomes the first company in the country to distribute a 100% Spanish technology compressor in the foreign market.
  • In the coming months, the compressor that the company has installed in the first green hydrogen plant in Spain, the Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca project, will be fully operational.
  • In a context of energy transition at European and global level, green hydrogen is gaining more and more weight in the industrial energy market.

Green hydrogen is becoming one of the fundamental pillars for the decarbonization of the economy with the impulse of different initiatives developed in the national and international markets. In this context of energy transition, the Burgos company Hiperbaric, a pioneer in our country in the development of hydrogen compression equipment for industry and sustainable mobility, has just supplied the first 100% Spanish technology compressor in the foreign market to supply hydrogen to the refueling station for sustainable buses in the German city of Bielefeld.

The hydrogen compressor for Germany has been purchased by Framatome, one of the world’s leading companies in providing energy storage solutions and renewable hydrogen refueling stations for mobility. The Bielefeld hydrogen station will have a supply capacity of 120 kg of hydrogen per day, enough to run four buses 24 hours a day, with an efficiency of more than 85% and a hydrogen purity of more than 99%. These first four hydrogen buses will avoid emitting carbon dioxide into the air every day by using clean, sustainable and environmentally friendly energy. According to a study conducted by the company Framatome, a hydrogen bus saves more than half of the carbon dioxide emissions over its lifetime compared to a diesel-powered bus.

For Andrés Hernando, CEO of Hiperbaric, this project is a boost for the company’s international expansion process in the hydrogen field. “There are very few companies in the world focused on high-pressure hydrogen compression, which is today one of the challenges for the success of hydrogen as an energy vector, and to decrease dependence on fossil fuels and natural gas,” Hernando points out.

Power To Green Hydrogen Mallorca

The commercialization of the first compressor in the international market is added to the projects already developed on Spanish soil, where the company participates in several programs that advance towards a sustainable energy model as the case of the ‘Power to Green Hydrogen’ in Mallorca, of the consortium led by ENAGAS, ACCIONA, CEMEX, IDEA and Redexis, to deploy the renewable hydrogen ecosystem on the island, and where Hiperbaric participates with the supply of a hydrogen compressor.

This industrial project is the core of the Green Hysland project, in which the European Union, through the FCH JU (Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking) has committed 10 million euros to support the deployment of the necessary infrastructures. The project is part of the Spanish Government’s Roadmap, which envisages reaching four gigawatts of production capacity by 2030, mobilizing an estimated total investment of 8.9 billion euros.

In addition, last year the company from Burgos delivered the first compressor made by a Spanish company to refuel hydrogen plants at the facilities of the National Hydrogen Center (CNH2) in Puertollano, Ciudad Real. The equipment supplies hydrogen at 900 bar pressure, which is the highest hydrogen storage pressure for a latest-generation hydrogen generator at international level. The model developed by the Spanish multinational includes the refrigeration system and is capable of compressing hydrogen and refilling storage tanks from 500 to 1000 bar.

World leader in high pressure technology

Hiperbaric has been a world leader in high-pressure technologies for different sectors for more than 20 years and has 1,000 compressors installed in 45 countries on five continents. “With our expertise in high-pressure applications we aim to be part of the solution for a sustainable energy transition and bring High Pressure Compression Technology to the hydrogen value chain,” says Hernando.

The company develops hydrogen compression technology with the design of hydrogen compressor equipment up to 1,000 bar pressure. Hiperbaric’s hydrogen compression technology offers multiple production and design advantages, thanks to the robustness of the parts and high fatigue strength. In addition, the number of moving parts is reduced, resulting in high durability of the compression system, with a service life of more than 10 years.
