Objective: This action consists of the installation of a semi-fast electric charging system that will provide the current infrastructure, placed in the company’s parking area located in front of the access door to the main building, with up to four additional charging points for electric vehicles: cars, motorcycles, bicycles, plug-in hybrids, and it will be intended mainly for public use to provide service to its workers and clients.

BIENESTAR – Promotion of heart-healthy spaces to prevent cardiovascular accidents

Objective: Actions aimed at minimizing and preventing cardiovascular accidents among the company’s workforce. Training activities are carried out to equip Hiperbaric’s non-healthcare personnel with the skills to use semi-automatic external defibrillation (AED) equipment for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. In addition, informational and advisory actions are provided on healthy eating guidelines according to the psychophysical requirements of the job, with the aim of improving or adapting nutrition to the work environment.

Objective: Initiatives to promote the physical and psychological fitness of all Hiperbaric employees. Various facilities are made available to the staff to encourage participation in different types of physical activities: more affordable access to sports centers, participation in races, group physical activities, and sports awards. In addition, to prevent psychosocial risks, programs, activities, and workshops offering psychological support and counselling are implemented, in which the various psychosocial risks present within the workforce are analysed and the progressive implementation of measures to prevent them is designed.

A generative artificial intelligence (AI) solution will be implemented to create knowledge and support decision-making. To feed this solution with data, the industrial processes carried out at the customer’s facilities will be digitized.

OnWindH2- Research into solutions for generating green hydrogen using wind energy at off-grid land sites

DioSiC- Research to improve the competitiveness of the power diode with silicon carbide substrate

Objective: Project focused on cutting-edge microelectronics and semiconductors, carried out by a consortium of three companies, led by NANOKER, and also including HIPERBARIC and FAGOR ELECTRÓNICA. Its main objective is to overcome the current limitations of using silicon carbide (SiC) in the manufacture of polycrystalline silicon substrates using HIP (Hot Isostatic Pressing) technology. The project involves the collaboration of six leading national and international technology centers and two technology companies related to the sector.

Objective: R&D project focused on developing technologies to boost the Spanish fusion industry. It will be carried out by two groups: one consisting of research organizations (CEIT (leader), CIEMAT, IDONIAL, and the University of Granada); and another consisting of companies (LEADING (leader), HIPERBARIC, ROVALMA, INNOMAQ21, and NOVADEP). The project will research advanced manufacturing materials and technologies to efficiently, sustainably, and scalably manufacture large, high-performance components for fusion applications. Specifically, it will work on different approaches, building three representative components relevant to ITER and DEMO.

Objective: Project framed within the decarbonization of air transport, will be executed by a consortium of four industrial companies, led by ACITURRI, with HIPERBARIC participating as a partner along with two SMEs: AMTEC and CELLMAT TECHNOLOGIES. The main objective is to research key processes for the efficient storage of liquid hydrogen (LH2) in tanks for use in air transport, seeking to optimize safety, efficiency, and costs, and facilitating the adoption of hydrogen as an aviation fuel. The project will have the support of five OPIs (Operational Investment Partnerships) between leading technology centers and universities nationwide, in addition to other specialized technical collaborations.

These partners include technology centers, universities, public administrations, energy and logistics operators, and technological and industrial companies such as Hiperbaric, which participates as a project partner.

Castilla y Leon Hydrogen Valley includes 11 pilot sites across Castilla y León, each demonstrating a key element of the hydrogen value chain — from production and distribution to end use in transport, industry, and energy. Together, they form an integrated ecosystem proving the versatility and scalability of green hydrogen.

Objective: Project framed in the field of green hydrogen, backed by a consortium of seven companies, led by Hiperbaric, and which also includes the companies Aciturri, Adisseo, Ariema, Desmasa, DGH Technological Solutions and MTorres. The overall objective is research into technologies, materials and processes at different stages of the hydrogen value chain: the generation of hydrogen by alkaline electrolysis technology, the compression of this gas at very high pressure and providing a high flow rate, innovative solutions for storage and transport at very high pressure, and the use, on the one hand, in the refuelling of hydrogen in electric vehicles (fuel cells), and on the other hand in a process of methanation of CO₂ recovered in the chemical industry (chemical reagent), with the aim of increasing efficiency, reducing the economic cost and minimizing the carbon footprint in all of them. The project will have the support of more than a dozen Public Research Organizations (OPIs) among technological centers and leading universities at the national level, in addition to other specialized technical collaborations.

TRANSIT – Training Network Sustainable Technologies

Objective: Sustainable technologies (pulsed electric field, ultrasound, non-thermal plasma and high hydrostatic pressure) provide clean-label, nutritious food products and solutions to antimicrobial resistance. Nevertheless, the application of these technologies is currently limited in the food industry. The EU-funded TRANSIT project brings together 12 participating organisations from eight European countries to train the next generation of scientists to optimise and drive the utility of these sustainable technologies in the food industry. TRANSIT will identify the main genes of pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms associated with food and will design effective antimicrobial impact strategies for the non-thermal technologies. In collaboration with renowned industrial partners, the product range for application will be extended taking into account consumer acceptance, and upscaling of the equipment will be realised to accelerate market uptake of sustainably produced foods. ERAF - Efficiency and Fatigue Resistance in high pressure equipment

Convocation: Plan Adelanta – I+d+i Program (04-11-BU-0010)

Type of action: Project in collaboration with the company Desmasa, S.L. and involving the UBU, ITCL, CTME and AIN research centers, as well as two important French companies.

Period of execution: 2011 – 2013

Description: Project dedicated to improving the reliability of high pressure equipment. Hiperbaric worked on increasing the service life of critical elements such as the vessel, plugs or different types of seals, while Desmasa focused on improving the energy efficiency of intensifiers and increasing the service life of high-pressure piping and fittings.

Torres Quevedo 2009

Recruitment of a food technologist involved in the study of new technologies for obtaining innovative and healthy foods in the period 2009 – 2011. This action is framed within the aids of the National Program for Recruitment and Incorporation of Human Resources for Research, within the framework of the National Plan for Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation 2008-2011 (PTQ-09-01-00677). Call managed by the MINECO and financed by the Plan E, with co-financing from the European Social Fund.

INNCORPORA 2011

Hiring of a PhD Engineer, expert in numerical simulation, for her participation in ERAF, a high strategic level Industrial Research project that was developed between 2011 and 2013. Action framed within the Inncorpora – Torres Quevedo Subprogram (PTQ-11-04940) and financed by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness from the European Social Fund.

Novel Q - Novel processing methods for the production and distribution of high-quality and safe food

Type of action: Consortium project. Made up of 36 European partners

Budget: 0,13 M€ (overall budget 30 M€)

Period of execution: 2008 – 2011

Description: This was a powerful multi-sector project in which more than 30 European partners joined forces to develop and validate new food processing (HPP, PEF, Plasma, microwave, radio frequency and ohmic heating) and packaging technologies that improved food quality (increased shelf life and preservation of organoleptic properties). Hiperbaric participated in collaboration with the Dutch company TOP BV in the demonstration of commercial food products in Benelux.

FUTURAL - Contribution of New Technologies to safer, more nutritious, more convenient and smarter food for the future.

Type of action: Collaborative R&D project. Consortium, made up of 24 companies from the agri-food sector and 12 state research organizations.

Description: The various participants worked on the development and implementation of new technologies for the production of the foods of the future, with the aim of adapting them to the new consumption needs, thus increasing the competitiveness of the Spanish agri-food sector. As part of this project, Hiperbaric designed the Hiperbaric 420 equipment, the largest and most productive on the market at the time, which won the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Innovation Award in 2008.

WIRELEXTREM - Wireless prototype for temperature measurement under extreme conditions

Budget: 0,07 M€

Period of execution: 2013 – 2014

Description: The design of a temperature measurement prototype capable of recording temperature data between -30ºC and 130ºC under high pressure conditions (up to 7,000 bar) inside a hyperbaric chamber was carried out. The prototype is wireless and is controlled from a specifically designed PC user interface. In addition, an insulating container was designed to maintain a constant temperature throughout the HPP process inside it, and into which the temperature probe can be inserted.

PROMARE - Proactive maintenance of unique remote machines

Type of action: Consortium project promoted by CBECYL and led by Hiperbaric. Participants: Nicolás Correa, GNC Manufacturing, Desmasa, IIbermaq and the research centers: CARTIF, ITCL and UBU.

Period of execution: 2011 – 2013

Description: The development of new tools focused on the intelligent and proactive maintenance of singular remote machines manufactured by the companies of the consortium once installed in their customers’ factories has been carried out. Each company has developed and implemented the diagnostic methods and management tools best suited to its process. These tools make it possible, on the one hand, to offer a high value-added remote maintenance service and, on the other, to use the information gathered to redesign critical parts of the new machines.

HST Food Train - Science based precision processing for future healthy, structured and tasteful fruit and vegetable based foods: an integrated research and training program

Description: This training network focused on training multidisciplinary experts with multi-sectoral experience and expertise (from academia to the private sector) on the impact of new food processing technologies on the composition and microstructure of fruit and vegetable-based foods. The relationships between these properties and product functionality, such as texture/rheology, flavor and nutrient bioaccessibility, were also studied.

FRESHPRESS - Development of a new range of high quality pasteurized/sterilized high pressure treated products for different commercial sectors and search for integral solutions for the improvement of existing high pressure treatment lines.

Period of execution: 2012 – 2014

Description: The overall objective was to develop a new range of liquid and semi-solid products of high nutritional and sensory quality through high pressure processing and in combination with other technological barriers for their preservation under refrigeration and at ambient temperature. As part of this project, Hiperbaric developed a technological solution for HPP processing of liquid and semi-solid products in large containers (bags). This solution improves productivity and reduces the cost of the process (and therefore of the product) and results in a reduction of the environmental impact.

ETERNITY - Development of high-pressure vessels with infinite lifetime

Description: Following the positive result of the initial feasibility study (Phase 1) Hiperbaric has developed an ambitious project consisting in the development of the Bulk HPP technology, materialized in a first prototype (Hiperbaric 525 Bulk) capable of over 4,000 L/h of liquid processing. The first commercial equipment will be put into production in Europe at the end of 2019. This new range of equipment allows a reduction in processing cost and energy consumption, as well as simplifying the installation and integration of HPP technology within beverage production lines.

Description:

This project involves research on different technologies, techniques, tools and methodologies within the framework of Industry 4.0, with the aim of increasing the operational capacity of industrial processes (OEE – Overall Equipment Efficiency). Throughout the execution of the project, the partners will adopt production and maintenance solutions for the connected industry, paying special attention to cybersecurity aspects. Hiperbaric is focused on the development and integration of tools that will allow it to obtain and analyze data from all its HPP equipment installed worldwide to improve the performance of its equipment and optimize maintenance tasks.

The pasteurizing effect of high pressure was recognized in the 19th century, when in 1899 Hite discovered the shelf life extension in milk using this process. However, it was not until the 1990s, that the first HPP products began to be marketed in Japan and Europe. In 2000, 10 years later, this technology became a recognized alternative to traditional food processing (thermal or chemical). The commercial success of this process was due to the design of equipment better adapted to industrial requirements, such as its horizontal layout and the growing demand by consumers for safe and more natural products.

From a legal point of view, high pressure processing technology is recognized by the main food authorities in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia…

In the United States, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) published a document in 2000 prepared by the IFT (Institute of Food Technologists) that endorsed HPP technology as an alternative to classic food preservation processes. Later, the USDA (US Department of Agriculture) published in 2003 the first document recognizing the efficacy of high pressures for the elimination of Listeria monocytogenes in a packaged meat product ready for consumption.

In Europe, the EC (European Commission) gave its first approval in 2001 for the marketing of HPP fruit products. In 2018, they published a document in which declared that “high pressure processing is a food transformation technology by which solid or liquid foods are subjected to high pressures to improve their safety and, in some cases, their quality and organoleptic characteristics”.

In Canada, Health Canada issued a statement in 2016 authorizing the marketing of HPP products without prior notification to the national health authority.
